SHIRO WAT

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp kibbeh (ghee)
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp garlic paste
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • ½ cup shiro powder
  • 2 tbsp berbere
  • 2 cups water

Prep Hacks

  • Can be prepared simultaneously with Doro Wat
  • Have all spices measured and ready

Instructions

    1. Heat kibbeh and saute onions until very soft.

    2. Add garlic, saute for 2 min.

    3. Add tomatoes - saute for 5 min.

    4. Stir in shiro powder slowly to not clump.

    5. Mix in berbere and hot water and bring to a boil.

    6. Simmer for 15 min - adjust water until desired thickness.

Noor's Tips for Junior Chefs!

Serve it all on a layer of injera – yummy Ethiopian flatbread!
Add in some cabbage, beets or collard greens! They are all traditional accompaniments.
You can include cottage cheese as a replacement for traditional Ethiopian cheese
